TEJAS TUBULAR PROCESSING
a. - Product Entry/Raw Material
Even with only the very best seamless steel purchased, Tejas Tubular's qualified QC Specialists evaluate and inspect products received to ensure total compliance to standards and specifications before processing. Tejas Tubular processes only high-quality material that meets metallurgical and mechanical requirements imposed by the company's stringent internal specifications and customer standards.
Product Supplied by Customer
Before processing, customer materials are verified against industry standards and approved by the Quality Assurance Department. Only then will the product be accepted for processing.
Traceability
Tejas Tubular's Traceability Database tracks each steel heat from receiving to the end product. This traceability system ensures finished product identification and monitors product field performance.
b. - Forging / Upsetter
In order to augment wall thickness for threading purposes the tubular product requirements to be upsetted. After being cut to length, tube ends are heated by a natural gas-fired slot furnace and then fed into the throat of a single toggle press of Tejas Tubular's AJAX upsetter where the hot end is gripped and forged by a die and punch set.
After being upset, tubing is ejected and left to cool to ambient temperature. The Tejas Tubular upsetters have been designed to ensure the geometry of the upset and in such way that minimizes stress in the material.
The upset tubular product is then heat treated to customer specifications and industry standards, straightened, and inspected (Visual & Dimension, Drift, Special End Area, and NDT 5500 EMI: longitudinal, transverse, wall thickness and grade comparison full body Inspection). Tejas Tubular can forge tubing and drill pipe upsets in accordance with API specifications and any other standards. Special upsets for premium and integral connections can also be forged on request.
Technical Characteristics
Upsetting Force 1200 Metric Tons, Upsetting stroke: 18"; Pipe OD: 1" to 5"; API, Extended and Premium upset can be processed on request.
c. - Heat Treatment Austenitizing / Annealing Furnace
Preheating: Two Stage Induction Heaters (1000KW each) preheat the pipes before Tejas Tubular's 90' gas fired austenitizing furnace slowly heats the tubular products in four stages to a temperature above the transformation range.
After reaching the required temperature and maintaining it just long enough to heat the entire tube evenly throughout, the tubular product is then allowed to cool at a rate slow enough to prevent any hardening.
The required temperature for this process should be slightly above the critical point, which varies for different steel compositions and grades. Low-carbon steel should be annealed at about 1650 degrees F, and high-carbon steel at between 1400 and 1500 degrees F. The purpose of annealing is not only to soften steel for machining, but to remove all strains of the upsetting or production process of the pipe itself.
Tejas Tubular Processors furnace, with its electronically controlled temperature and transfer speed technology, is taking all necessary steps not to heat the steel much above the decalescence or hardening point as this would increase the coarseness of the grain in the steel structure.

Water Quench
Steel hardens when the austenite transforms to martensite as the steel is quenched, passing fairly rapidly through the critical temperature range of about 1500 to 1000 degrees F from the austenitizing temperature. The rapid heat removal during Tejas Tubular nine hundred gallon water per minute quench system consisting of 240 nozzles in 12 rows - causes carbon atoms to become trapped in highly-stressed positions among other atoms of the steel structure, which will give the pipe its hardness and strength for the required grade of the tubular product. The chemical composition of the pipe determines the upperand lower limits of this critical temperature range and the vital quench rate required through this range.

Temper
Upon completion of hardening, the as-quenched tubular product is highly stressed and brittle and transported on rotating lines to Tejas Tubular Gas fired walking beam Temper furnace. There tempering will be performed when the pipe is air cooled to about 150 -125°F after the quench processes, as Tempering performed before the tube reaches "hand warm"; temperatures, brings a risk of cracking while cooling from the process, due to insufficient transformation to martensite. By renewed heating of the pipe to and holding it at an intermediate heat, the inter-atomic stresses in the martensite are partially relieved, and the tubular product becomes usable having improved toughness and ductility. The heat treated pipe is then cooled in still air on a rotating table before it reaches the cross roll straightener in Tejas Tubular's integrated process flow.

d. - Cross Roll Straightener
After Heat treatment all pipes are visually inspected for deviation from straight or chord height to comply with API specification and straightened with Tejas Tubular Processors cross roll straightener if necessary.
e. - Plain End Hydrotester
To comply with API testing requirements and customer standards Tejas Tubular has designed its custom built Plain End Hydro Tester which can apply Test Pressure up to 15000 PSI for Hydrostatic tests. Pipe is fed into the equipment where appropriate test pressure is applied and held for a specified time inside the pipe body according to specifications. The pressure and time requirements are based on dimensions grade and thread profile or customer requirements.
